Private therapy can be undertaken by a Clinical Counsellor, Psychologist or Clinical Social Worker. Your first session will start with an intake form and a "Client Agreement" (Limits of Confidentiality and Cancellation Policy). Your counsellor will introduce themselves and then begin with a discussion around what your needs are what your goals of counselling are. You decide what what you want from the sessions and what is discussed. Confidentiality is paramount with the exception being when the counsellor perceives either the client, or another individual being "at risk of harm".
What to Expect in Counselling
Initial Consultation
The first session typically involves an initial consultation where the counsellor will gather information about your background, current situation, and reasons for seeking counselling. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions about the process.
Setting Goals
Together with your counsellor, you will discuss and set specific goals for your counselling sessions. This helps to create a focused plan for your therapy.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is a cornerstone of counselling. You can expect that what you share in sessions will remain private, with some exceptions related to safety and legal obligations.
Types of Techniques that may be Used
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Mindfulness Based Therapy
Internal Family System
Emotion Focused Therapy
Frequency of Sessions
Sessions typically occur weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your needs and the recommendations of your counsellor. The duration of therapy can vary based on individual circumstances.
Progress Evaluation
Throughout the counselling process, you and your counsellor will periodically evaluate your progress towards the goals set at the beginning of therapy. This helps to ensure that the sessions remain effective and relevant.
Ending Counselling
When you feel you have achieved your goals, or if you and your counsellor agree that it’s time to end the sessions, you will have a concluding session to reflect on your progress and discuss any future steps.
